"I will discuss the statistical properties of the dynamics of surface
diffeomorphisms, focusing on the class of maps having positive
topological entropy. The classical theory of differentiable dynamics
describes systems which satisfy a uniformly hyperbolic condition: the
dynamics decomposes into a finite number of limit sets, most orbits
equidistribute towards natural invariant measures, and their statistical
properties are described by limit theorems. Significant progress has
been made in extending these results to broader classes of non-uniformly
hyperbolic systems. During this lecture, I will present an approach,
that we recently developed with J. Buzzi and O. Sarig: the strong
positive recurrence property."
